Playing golf is a journey.  Not only is the adventure played on some of the most breath-taking terrain on the planet, it is also played in the often-less-explored regions of our own psyche. This challenge is one that reaps incredible rewards.  If this game has whispered your name, look forward to an adventure of a lifetime….and remember to remain PLAYFUL!

Looking for a golf professional and coach is a process and no shoes fit all.  Here are some hints to help you find the best guide – PGA or LPGA Pro – for your golf journey.

  • Understand who you are and what you really want.
  • Consider your personal agenda in seeking instruction.
  • Ask yourself if you have it in you to devote to an improvement plan.
  • Ask your golf friends and even random golfers who they might recommend.
  • Watch some pros giving golf instruction and decide if you like what you observe.
  • Interview several LPGA and PGA Professionals and ask them about their background: education, playing and coaching experience and their teaching philosophy. Ask about their teaching credentials!
  • Go with your gut after talking with several professionals and schedule your first lesson!

Have one lesson that is at least one hour.  After this first lesson, you should have a clear idea whether the pro you chose communicates in ways that you can relate to. Game improvement is a collaborative process.  It involves excellent communication between coach and student.  The thoughts you are offered should result in improved ball flight. It is difficult to stay motivated and commit to making a change without observing the following:

  • Simple and specific keys that produce the change you seek. (At least a portion of your time during the lesson).
  • More efficient movement.
  • Better ball flight.

Keep in mind that when you are making swing changes, you are repatterning a motor-learning program.  You are attempting to alter “muscle memory” and create new patterns of movement that will eventually result in new muscle memory.  Desired performance comes with deliberate and consistent practice – until the body feels the new pattern.
